Illness Benefit Certification - Update

Illness Benefit Certification - Update

Further to previous communication the IMO wish to advise members that negotiations with the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection are due to recommence on Tuesday 18th September.

These negotiations are in respect of a process to introduce closed certification and e-certification

In the meantime there is NO CHANGE to work practices for GPs in relation to illness certification on the new forms pending the completion of negotiations with the IMO.

- When using the new forms you are NOT required to code any illness (ICD -10 Coding).  GPs are only required to insert the information that was contained in the MC1 Forms – patient details and reason for illness which can be inserted in the section marked “Other” on the new form.
- Old MC1 forms can continue to be used until stocks expire and GPs will continue to be paid for these but will not be paid for photocopy forms.
- GPs will be paid for all forms received by the Department whether or not the patient claims illness benefit.  It is important, pending the introduction of a complete reconciliation process, that GPs keep a record of the Form Number and Patient Name of all forms issued.

We will continue to keep members updated and ensure that in whatever arrangement is agreed there is sufficient time for GPs to implement any changes in their practices and that the required resources are in place.
