Temporary Special Scheme of Paid Leave for Public Health Service Employees

We wanted to take this opportunity to update you with respect to the Special Scheme for those healthcare workers who contracted COVID-19 in the early stage of the pandemic, and who continue to suffer the after effects in the form of Long COVID.

As you may recall, the Special Scheme was extended until 31st March 2024 at which point it will lapse, if it is not extended further. The health service trade unions, including the IMO, have engaged with the HSE and the Department of Health in this matter, but to this point, no agreement has been reached.

In the meantime, the HSE has set in place a process to write to impacted healthcare workers informing of the conclusion of the Special Scheme and advising of the terms available under the Public Service Sick Leave Scheme. You can read the relevant HR Memos here and here.

The IMO will keep members updated as we move towards the end of March and will continue to support members who are currently within the terms of the Special Scheme.
