The IMO is the only medical organisation in Ireland representing General Practitioners interests at an individual and national level on issues on professional, contractual and health policy issues. A New Business Model for General PracticeFollowing an analysis of the IMO GP Benchmark Study and consultation with members the IMO developed a GP Strategy which was endorsed at a National GP Meeting in March 2010. As part of that Strategy the IMO commissioned a GP Workload Study to examine the realities of the full range of work undertaken by GPs.
Live IssuesThe core function of the IMO is to provide an industrial relations service to our Members. At any given time, in addition to advising and representing Members in a personal capacity, the IMO Secretariat will be representing Doctors on several national, regional or group issues. These issues require that the IMO engages with the HSE and the Department of Health on national or regional issues or with Hospitals on group and local issues. As part of these engagements, the IMO represents Doctors as employees or as professional service providers. In addition to this, the IMO also actively engages with health service employers to shape policy so as to deliver the best outcomes to our Members and their patients. GMS Contracts & AgreementsThe General Medical Services Scheme Contract was first introduced in 1972. Negotiations took place between 1966 and 1972 between the Department of Health and Children and the Irish Medical Union and the Irish Medical Association on its introduction. The GMS Scheme replaced the old dispensary system under which GP services had been provided up to 1972. An agreed circular from the Department of Health and Children (Circular 13/72) provided for the establishment of the General Medical Services.

Practice ManagementThe IMO has prepared a number of draft Employment Contracts for use by Practices when taking on Employees. These have been drafted to take account of the minimum Statutory Requirements and by best practice.
GP FeesSI No 638 of 2010 – This document gives effect to the reduction in professional fees payable to GPs as a result of the cuts announced by the Minister for Health in December 2010. The new rates which are detailed in this document are effective from 22 December 2010.
