Dr Nick van der Spek

The Role of the Doctor in the Child Protection Process
Dr Nick van der Spek, Consultant Paediatrician with a special interest in Community Child Health, incorporating Childhood Development and Disability, Autism, Child Protection and Childhood Incontinence. Qualified from the University of Amsterdam in 1981 and completed specialist paediatric training in Ireland and the UK in 2001. Qualifications: MB BCH (Amsterdam), DCH (Dublin), MSc (Community Child Health UC London), FRCP (Edinburgh), FRCPI (Dublin).

Since 2002 employed as Consultant Paediatrician in Cavan and Monaghan Hospitals providing an acute paediatric service in the hospital in Cavan and a community based paediatric service in the areas of his special interest for Cavan and Monaghan. Lead clinician in Child Protection.

Ms Ineke Durcan

Responsibilities of Social Workers within Child Protection
Ineke is President of the Irish Association of Social Workers and has extensive experience as a social worker in a number of different settings. Ineke started her career in the Mental Health Services, changed to Community Development and subsequently Child Welfare/Child Protection services. Following that, she was appointed as a social work manager, responsible for the child welfare and protection services in a community care area.

The duties involved managing a team of social workers and ancillary staff to ensure the delivery of a comprehensive childe welfare and protection service. It involved developing/establishing various family support services as well as other resources, like residential care centres for children and fostering services. A lot of this work involved close relationships with local community groups and other professionals working in the area

Mr John O'Connor

Legal Issues for the Medical Profession
John O’Connor is the Managing Partner in O’Connor Solicitors and has worked in the area of Health Care Law for over 10 years and a member of the Medico-Legal Society of Ireland. John is Solicitor to the Irish Medical Organisation in addition to acting for a number of medical professional bodies.

The firm of O’Connor Solicitors also acts for Medisec Ireland Limited providing advisory services to General Practitioners and also has extensive experience dealing with medical negligence claims.
