Intern Places - Update - April 2013

Further to our previous emails, you will be aware that the IMO has been putting pressure on the government to address the problems resulting from the significant shortage of intern places relative to graduates. We are happy to announce that we have received written confirmation from the Department of Health that the HSE will have approximately 70 additional posts available for interns commencing their training on July 8th 2013. (below). This commitment to create additional places should ensure that all EU graduates from the six medical schools in Ireland who have applied for an intern post and who meet the eligibility and qualifications for same will be allocated a post within the public health service as of July 2013.

While the 70 additional posts are hugely important, a significant number of non-EU graduates of Irish medical schools will not get intern posts. The IMO are continuing to lobby the Department of Health and heighten awareness of this issue.

We would like to extend thanks to all those students who sent letters to their local TDs highlighting this issue and who helped put pressure on the Minister to approve and allocate additional intern places as a matter of urgency.
