General Practice included for speciality Recognition of Certificate of Experience under Amendments to the Medical Practitioners Act

The Minister for Health & Children, Mr. Micheal Martin T.D. notified the Medical Council on 16 th April 2004 to amend rule dealing with bodies eligible to grant a Certificate of Experience to include appropriate time spent in the speciality of General Practice as eligible for recognition of experience. For the purpose of obtaining a Certificate of Experience a doctor must complete a prescribed period of employment of a period not less than 12 months, of which 3 months must be spent Medicine and 3 months in Surgery. As part of the 12-month period a person may be employed for not less than 2 months and not more than 3 months in the following specialities:
- Emergency Medicine
- General Practice
- Obstetrics & Gynaecology
- Paediatrics
- Psychiatry
