The Irish Medical Organisation was formed in 1984 following the amalgamation of the Irish Medical Association and the Irish Medical Union, to act as the national representative medical organisation linking all branches of the medical profession in Ireland. The Organisation is the sole negotiating body on behalf of all doctors in Ireland, recognised for negotiating purposes under the 1941 Trade Union Act.

The role of the IMO is to represent doctors in Ireland and to provide them with all relevant services.
It is committed to the development of a caring, efficient and effective Health Service.
Negotiation and Representation
- Negotiation on behalf of doctors with the Department of Health and Children and other relevant Government Departments.
- Negotiation with HSE, Voluntary Hospitals, Nominated Health Agencies, IBEC and other employer representatives.
- Representation of doctors in meetings with the Medical Council, VHI, Quinn Healthcare, Aviva Healthcare, Irish Insurance Federation, the Incorporated Law Society, the Public Appointment Service, Irish Congress of Trade Unions and Medical Defence Organisations.
- The IMO is the sole representative body for doctors at the Health Service National Joint Council
- The Organisation represents doctors at individual and collective level at the Labour Relations Commission, the Labour Court, Rights Commissioner Hearings and the National Implementation Body.
- Irish doctors are represented in International Affairs by the IMO.
