Be Prepared for the Intern Year

Be Prepared for the Intern Year

NCHDs, particularly interns, are the most vulnerable group within the health services and in almost every area of the country the IMO has regularly had to be called in to uphold the most basic contractual entitlements. It is vital that all students know what is ahead of them when they start in their new hospital. Interns are easily targeted because of:

  • Lack of Understanding of rights
  • No established relationships with colleagues
  • Fear of drawing attention

IMO Intern Information

A key objective of the IMO is to ensure that the rights and entitlements of Non Consultant Hospital Doctors (NCHDs) are protected at all times in a health service that provides quality, fairness and equity for doctors and patients alike.

Interns must equip themselves with a thorough understanding of their contractual rights in order that any breach of these rights can be identified and reported to the IMO to resolve.

In order to assist Interns the IMO has set out an outline of the key entitlements of the National NCHD contract of employment (negotiated between the IMO and the HSE) of relevance to Interns. A copy of the NCHD contract should be provided by the HSE to each Intern for signing on commencement of employment.
